Every lender knows how to sell their credit card deals. Sometimes it helps to step back from the barrage of catchphrases to see what these credit card deals are really selling.
  • Low introductory rate: Sometimes the rate you start with isn't the rate you keep.
  • Low ongoing fee: If you're charged a very low annual fee for using your card, it could be at the cost of other benefits such as a reward program.
  • 0% on balance transfers: When you switch over credit card debts to your new card, you're often given a low or 0% rate for these debts in the first 6 months. Double check and make sure there are no additional transaction fees, which could cost you hundreds.
  • Interest free days: Many cards give you about 55 days before they start charging interest on your purchases.
  • Reward programs: A feature not common for low rate cards, it gives a variety of spending benefits such as Frequent Flyer points.
Most cards only offer a few of these features, so think about the ones you really need before applying. You'll thank yourself later if you do some simple research before taking the bait.
