Those who have a passion for the rush of lift-off and wear their frequent flyer mileage as a badge of honour have a credit card option tailored to their tastes. The Jetstar MasterCard is a travel rewards credit card designed to suit the globe-trotter. With savings on flights, exclusive offers and affordable rates and fees, the right consumer could find much to like in this product.

Key benefits of the Jetstar MasterCard

The Jetstar MasterCard's signature feature is the reward points you can earn to fly on the cheap. With every $100 you spend on eligible purchases — which excludes cash advances, balance transfers and the like — you'll earn one Jetstar dollar, up to a maximum of 500 per year. If it's easier, think of it this way: Every $1 you spend earns you one Jetstar cent.

When you reach 100 Jetstar dollars, you'll automatically receive a travel voucher for that amount via email. These can then be redeemed on Jetstar flights and holiday products. The latter includes:

  • Packages
  • Accommodation
  • Activities
  • Transfer
  • Parking
  • Insurances, taxes and fees
  • Other costs associated with Jetstar reservation bookings

The travel vouchers must be used within six months of when they were issued, according to the date in the top right hand corner. This, coupled with the relatively high cost of earning the dollars, means cardholders shouldn't view this travel rewards credit card as a way to fund lots of holidays they wouldn't otherwise take. Rather, the Jetstar MasterCard is better suited to those who do a large degree of flying and spending anyway, and want to limit that cost.

If you'd rather fly with another provider, you can also opt to use this reward points credit card to enter the Qantas Frequent Flyer Rewards programme. Every $1 will earn you 0.5 Qantas points, which you can exchange for hotel bookings, flights or products in the Qantas online store.

Travellers can also take advantage of the Jetstar MasterCard's no booking and service fee feature. As long as you apply through the Jetstar website or call centres, you won't have to add these expenses on top.

Jetstar MasterCard's main features

One advantage of the Jetstar MasterCard is the relatively lower fees and charges. These include:

  • A 14.99 percent interest rate — though being a variable rate, this is subject to change
  • An annual fee of $59
  • 55 days interest free on purchases, provided you've paid your account in full and on time
  • 0 percent balance transfers for the first 10 months

Note, however, that cash advances will incur an interest rate of 21.99 percent, so if you get caught in a bind and need to withdraw some money, it will cost you.

And just as with any MasterCard, you'll be able to use this JetStar credit card all over the world — 32 million locations across 210 countries, to be exact.

Applying for a Jetstar MasterCard

You can apply for a Jetstar MasterCard online, and the process shouldn't take any longer than 10 minutes. First, however, you'll need to make sure you're eligible to apply:

  • Are you 18 or over?
  • Are you a permanent Australian resident?
  • Do you have an Australian mailing address?
  • Do you have a good credit rating?
  • Do you make at least $30,000 a year before tax?

If you answered yes to all of those, then you can apply. You'll also need to provide evidence of your:

  • Gross annual salary
  • Australian driver's licence number, if possible
  • Monthly expenses
  • Current employer
  • Accountant, if self-employed or retired

The Jetstar team aim to get back to applicants within 10 working days. Make sure to get your email right on the application, or else you won't be able to receive your rewards vouchers.

Once approved, you will be allocated a credit limit for the Jetstar MasterCard. If you aren't happy and want a higher one, you can apply to increase it after six months has passed.
