Annualised figures are the average per year returns of the rated option based on the cumulative returns for the past 5 years to 30/06/2016, past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance. Performance and fee data is based on the option which is rated by SuperRatings and stated on each product's landing page.

Benchmark investment information - how performance is measured

To ensure comparability for consumers, the RateCity superannuation comparison is based on the asset allocation of each of the MySuper/Pension products, irrespective of the name of the investment option. This methodology allows consumers to compare products on a like for like basis and removes any ambiguities associated with the name of the investment option. For example, an investment option may be classified as growth, however its asset allocation may in fact mean it should be classified as high growth. By using the asset allocation as the dominant identifier, we believe this provides the most robust framework for consumers to compare funds and recognise that this is a consistent approach to that of SuperRatings methodology.

What the researchers say

Equip was founded in 1931 as the Provident Fund of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria, with membership now open to the general public. Equip's Account Based Pension has achieved a Platinum rating for the past 10 consecutive years.

Equip offers a choice of 11 investment options, consisting of 5 Diversified and 6 Single Sector options. The Balanced Growth option has outperformed the SuperRatings Index over the medium and long term.

Fees are lower than the industry average across all account balances assessed, and to assist members with higher account balances, the administration fee has been capped for account balances over $450,000. No fees are charged for switching investments; however, an exit fee applies to partial and full withdrawals.

Equip provides good flexibility, with members having the ability to receive payments fortnightly through to annually and members able to nominate the investment option(s) from which pension payments are to be taken. Members can also select from reversionary pension, binding death nomination and non-binding lump sum death benefits.

A range of online tools, calculators and educational resources are available through the fund's website. Members also have access to free retirement seminars presented by Equip Financial Planning and tailored for people approaching or already in retirement.
