Benchmark investment information - how performance is measured

To ensure comparability for consumers, the RateCity superannuation comparison is based on the asset allocation of each of the MySuper/Pension products, irrespective of the name of the investment option. This methodology allows consumers to compare products on a like for like basis and removes any ambiguities associated with the name of the investment option. For example, an investment option may be classified as growth, however its asset allocation may in fact mean it should be classified as high growth. By using the asset allocation as the dominant identifier, we believe this provides the most robust framework for consumers to compare funds and recognise that this is a consistent approach to that of SuperRatings methodology.

What the researchers say

Established in 2003, The IOOF Portfolio Service Allocated Pension is a standalone retirement product open to the public, providing they have a minimum initial investment of $20,000.

The investment menu caters to all types of investors with an extensive choice of Multi and Asset Specific strategies as well access to Direct Shares and Term Deposits. Established 1 July 2007, the Multi Series Balanced Trust outperformed the SuperRatings Index in 2015, while long term returns lag the Index.

Fees are higher than the industry average across all account balances assessed, however, discounts apply once a member's balance exceeds $100,000. The fixed dollar fee is waived on balances over $150,000.

Product flexibility is strong with 5 pension payment frequencies available, while death benefit choices include binding and non-binding nominations, as well as reversionary and child pension options.

Members wanting to supplement their income while still working have the ability to commence a transition to retirement pension. Portfolio Online, IOOF's online portfolio management tool, provides members with 24 hour access to their account while a full financial planning service on a fee-for-service basis is also available.
