Benchmark investment information - how performance is measured

To ensure comparability for consumers, the RateCity superannuation comparison is based on the asset allocation of each of the MySuper/Pension products, irrespective of the name of the investment option. This methodology allows consumers to compare products on a like for like basis and removes any ambiguities associated with the name of the investment option. For example, an investment option may be classified as growth, however its asset allocation may in fact mean it should be classified as high growth. By using the asset allocation as the dominant identifier, we believe this provides the most robust framework for consumers to compare funds and recognise that this is a consistent approach to that of SuperRatings methodology.

What the researchers say

legalsuper was established in 1989 to provide superannuation services to legal professionals. Today, legalsuper is a public offer fund, which is dedicated to serving the legal community. legalsuper Pension opened in 2006.

Pension members can access 12 Diversified and Single-Sector investment options, which include a Socially Responsible option. Furthermore, access to ASX300 shares, Term Deposits, ETFs and a selection of LICs is also available via the Direct Investment Option (Use of the Direct Investment Option entails additional costs). The legalsuper Allocated Pension Balanced option has outperformed the SuperRatings Index over the five years to 30 June 2015.

Fees associated with this product are rated as good across all assessed account balances. No Switching fees are charged, although transaction costs may be incurred for changing investment options. When a member's account balance exceeds $350,000 on the 30th of June, their Administration fee is capped.

legalsuper Allocated Pension contains a good level of flexibility and choice. A minimum initial investment of $20,000 applies and members have access to pension payments in a variety of frequencies ranging from fortnightly to yearly. A Transition to Retirement Pension is also available with online top-up functionality for pre-retirees wishing to restart their income as they approach retirement.

legalsuper members have access to workplace seminars and one-on-one meetings with Client Service Managers. legalsuper has been working with SANE Australian on Mental Health Programs.
