Annualised figures are the average per year returns of the rated option based on the cumulative returns for the past 5 years to 30/06/2015, past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance. Performance and fee data is based on the option which is rated by SuperRatings and stated on each product's landing page.

Benchmark investment information - how performance is measured

To ensure comparability for consumers, the RateCity superannuation comparison is based on the asset allocation of each of the MySuper/Pension products, irrespective of the name of the investment option. This methodology allows consumers to compare products on a like for like basis and removes any ambiguities associated with the name of the investment option. For example, an investment option may be classified as growth, however its asset allocation may in fact mean it should be classified as high growth. By using the asset allocation as the dominant identifier, we believe this provides the most robust framework for consumers to compare funds and recognise that this is a consistent approach to that of SuperRatings methodology.

What the researchers say

LGIAsuper is the superannuation fund for all Queensland local government employees and their families. With an initial investment of $50,000, the LGIAsuper Pension Account provides retirees with an income stream with the benefit of the quality features offered by the fund. The product retains the SuperRatings Platinum rating for 2016.

The investment menu includes six Multi and six Asset Specific options, including two Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) options for the ethical investor. While the Balanced option return sat below the SuperRatings Index in 2015, this was accompanied by low levels of volatility, with strong risk-adjusted returns demonstrated over the longer term.

The simple fee structure is competitively priced across all account balances assessed, also allowing members to manage their investment without incurring any transaction costs.

Additional benefits include 5 pension payment frequencies, free in-house limited advice, personal customer service through the fund's in-house administration setup and online access to pension details, calculators, tools and other member educational material. The fund's website is easy to use and is segmented based on member needs. A transition to retirement pension is also available for those looking to supplement their income while still working.
