Annualised figures are the average per year returns of the rated option based on the cumulative returns for the past 5 years to 30/06/2016, past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance. Performance and fee data is based on the option which is rated by SuperRatings and stated on each product's landing page.

Benchmark investment information - how performance is measured

To ensure comparability for consumers, the RateCity superannuation comparison is based on the asset allocation of each of the MySuper/Pension products, irrespective of the name of the investment option. This methodology allows consumers to compare products on a like for like basis and removes any ambiguities associated with the name of the investment option. For example, an investment option may be classified as growth, however its asset allocation may in fact mean it should be classified as high growth. By using the asset allocation as the dominant identifier, we believe this provides the most robust framework for consumers to compare funds and recognise that this is a consistent approach to that of SuperRatings methodology.

What the researchers say

Lutheran Super was established as a Superannuation fund for employees of the Lutheran Church and their families. The Account Based Pension product launched on 1 July 2008 and provides members with an income stream both pre and post retirement. Members require $50,000 to open an account, and can open either an Account Based Pension or Transition to Retirement Pension.

The investment menu consists of three Multi and three Asset Specific options including a Socially Responsible Australian Shares option for the ethical investor. Members have the flexibility to be able to invest in six options at any given time. Lutheran Super's Balanced option underperformed the SuperRatings Index over the short and long term.

Lutheran Super's fees are lower than the industry average across all account balances assessed; however, transaction fees do apply. Members are entitled to one free investment switch per year. It is noted that the fixed dollar fee relates to the standard Account Based Pension. This fee is higher for a Transition to Retirement Pension.

Members are restricted to monthly pension payments. However, the fund does offer binding, non-binding and reversionary death benefit nominations.

Lutheran Super's website includes a navigation functionality and educational material. Members have access to a good selection of planning tools on a range of financial matters.
