Annualised figures are the average per year returns of the rated option based on the cumulative returns for the past 5 years to 30/06/2016, past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance. Performance and fee data is based on the option which is rated by SuperRatings and stated on each product's landing page.

Benchmark investment information - how performance is measured

To ensure comparability for consumers, the RateCity superannuation comparison is based on the asset allocation of each of the MySuper/Pension products, irrespective of the name of the investment option. This methodology allows consumers to compare products on a like for like basis and removes any ambiguities associated with the name of the investment option. For example, an investment option may be classified as growth, however its asset allocation may in fact mean it should be classified as high growth. By using the asset allocation as the dominant identifier, we believe this provides the most robust framework for consumers to compare funds and recognise that this is a consistent approach to that of SuperRatings methodology.

What the researchers say

Originally established to cater for people working in the medical profession, MAP Super is now a public offer super fund servicing a variety of employees. The fund joined the OneVue group in February 2014.

MAP Pension members have access to 8 Diversified and Single-Sector investment options. The MAP Balanced option has underperformed the SuperRatings Index over the short term and long term.

Fees for this product are higher than the industry average across all account balances assessed. The member administration fee is subject to a minimum fee of $150 pa, but reduces as the account size grows, capped on balances over $1.5 million. Furthermore, members may be entitled to partner fee discounts by adding up their partners' accounts held with the fund. However, transaction fees apply for withdrawals and switches (0.4% per subsequent switch after 4 free switches each year).

A reasonable level of pension flexibility is provided, including a choice of 4 pension payment frequencies ranging from monthly to annually. Members can also nominate a fixed percentage pension drawdown order or pro-rata across investments. A minimum initial investment of $20,000 is required to commence a MAP Pension, and a Transition to Retirement Pension is also available.

A comprehensive financial advice service is available to members via Map Financial Planning.
