Annualised figures are the average per year returns of the rated option based on the cumulative returns for the past 5 years to 30/06/2016, past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance. Performance and fee data is based on the option which is rated by SuperRatings and stated on each product's landing page.

Benchmark investment information - how performance is measured

To ensure comparability for consumers, the RateCity superannuation comparison is based on the asset allocation of each of the MySuper/Pension products, irrespective of the name of the investment option. This methodology allows consumers to compare products on a like for like basis and removes any ambiguities associated with the name of the investment option. For example, an investment option may be classified as growth, however its asset allocation may in fact mean it should be classified as high growth. By using the asset allocation as the dominant identifier, we believe this provides the most robust framework for consumers to compare funds and recognise that this is a consistent approach to that of SuperRatings methodology.

What the researchers say

The Mercer Super Trust is one of the largest corporate super platforms in Australia and provides members with a strong brand history and a flexible range of competitive benefits. A minimum initial investment of $10,000 is required to start a Mercer Super Trust Allocated Pension.

The fund offers a wide range of investment options, including 'Ready-made' and 'Select-your-own' investment options, as well as a Mercer Direct investment option providing access to Direct Shares listed on the S&P/ASX 300, a range of Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) and Term Deposits. Members also have access to Mercer LifetimePlus, which is designed to give members an income for life. The Mercer Growth option outperformed the SuperRatings Index over the 5 years to 30 June 2016.

Fees are lower than the industry average across all account balances, with the administration fee waived on account balances over $250,000. Members are able to switch investment options and make withdrawals at no cost.

Mercer provides reasonable flexibility, with members having the ability to receive payments monthly, quarterly or annually. Members with more than one investment option can nominate the proportion of payments to be drawn from each option. Beneficiary options available include binding death nomination and reversionary pensions.

Members have access to Mercer financial advisers who can tailor super and retirement solutions to suit their needs. Online planning tools, newsletters and educational seminars are also available. The fund's website incorporates a selection of visual and functional features, including a Retirement Income Simulator tool to members.
