Benchmark investment information - how performance is measured

To ensure comparability for consumers, the RateCity superannuation comparison is based on the asset allocation of each of the MySuper/Pension products, irrespective of the name of the investment option. This methodology allows consumers to compare products on a like for like basis and removes any ambiguities associated with the name of the investment option. For example, an investment option may be classified as growth, however its asset allocation may in fact mean it should be classified as high growth. By using the asset allocation as the dominant identifier, we believe this provides the most robust framework for consumers to compare funds and recognise that this is a consistent approach to that of SuperRatings methodology.

What the researchers say

NESS Pension was established on 1 July 2008 to service the pension needs of employees in the electrical contracting, communication and associated industries in NSW. A minimum initial investment of $20,000 is required to commence membership.

Members have access to a simple investment menu comprising of 6 options across a range of asset classes. The fund introduced a set of new investment options in 2011 and therefore limited historical data is available. The Fund's Moderate option has underperformed the SuperRating Index over the 12 months to 30 June 2015.

NESS Pension's fees are higher than the industry average across all assessed account balances; however, the administration fee is capped at $9.59 per week. Members can switch between investment options at no cost; however, an exit fee applies when leaving the Fund.

Pension flexibility is in line with the industry average with a selection of 5 payment frequencies and a choice of binding, non-binding or reversionary death benefit payments. Members can also commence drawdown of their pension on approach to retirement, via the Transition to Retirement Pension.

Online access, newsletters, half-yearly member statements and financial planning services are available through the fund. Members also have access to a range of additional benefits such as competitive banking products from ME Bank and discounted health insurance from NIB.
