Annualised figures are the average per year returns of the rated option based on the cumulative returns for the past 5 years to 30/06/2015, past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance. Performance and fee data is based on the option which is rated by SuperRatings and stated on each product's landing page.

Benchmark investment information - how performance is measured

To ensure comparability for consumers, the RateCity superannuation comparison is based on the asset allocation of each of the MySuper/Pension products, irrespective of the name of the investment option. This methodology allows consumers to compare products on a like for like basis and removes any ambiguities associated with the name of the investment option. For example, an investment option may be classified as growth, however its asset allocation may in fact mean it should be classified as high growth. By using the asset allocation as the dominant identifier, we believe this provides the most robust framework for consumers to compare funds and recognise that this is a consistent approach to that of SuperRatings methodology.

Option Type Percentage of Growth Assets
min-max %
High Growth 91-100%
Growth 77-90%
Balanced 60-76%
Conservative Balanced 41-59%
Capital Stable 20-40%

What the researchers say

ANZ Smart Choice is an online, low-cost product that was established in December 2011. The latest addition to ANZ's product suite was introduced to compete against other low cost Retail Master Trust and Industry products. The product retained SuperRatings' Fast Mover award for the second consecutive year for its exceptional positioning, promotion and distribution strategies and continues to provide good value to members, securing SuperRatings Gold rating for 2016.

Members have access to a flexible and extensive investment menu across both Single and Diversified Sector options. ANZ Smart Choice provides members with a choice of two investment categories. The investment mix in the 'We Select' category is based on age, automatically adjusting to a more conservative investment mix as the member moves towards and into retirement. Members can also choose the 'Self Select' category, allowing them to select a personalised investment mix. The ANZ Smart Choice Pension Growth option underperformed the SuperRatings Index in 2015.

The fee structure is competitive across all account balances assessed. A standard Investment Management Fee (IMF) is charged on all investments, except the Cash option, which does not incur an IMF. Member transactions incur Buy Sell spreads.

Members can choose between 4 pension payment frequencies and nominate any day of the week for receiving pension payments via ANZ Internet Banking. Estate planning/beneficiary options provide members with a non-lapsing deed binding nomination. Other features include a transition to retirement pension and the ability for members to maintain death cover upon commencement of their pension.

Financial planning services are also available, whilst all customer communications, including annual statements are delivered to the member's online account.
