Annualised figures are the average per year returns of the rated option based on the cumulative returns for the past 5 years to 30/06/2016, past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance. Performance and fee data is based on the option which is rated by SuperRatings and stated on each product's landing page.

Benchmark investment information - how performance is measured

To ensure comparability for consumers, the RateCity superannuation comparison is based on the asset allocation of each of the MySuper/Pension products, irrespective of the name of the investment option. This methodology allows consumers to compare products on a like for like basis and removes any ambiguities associated with the name of the investment option. For example, an investment option may be classified as growth, however its asset allocation may in fact mean it should be classified as high growth. By using the asset allocation as the dominant identifier, we believe this provides the most robust framework for consumers to compare funds and recognise that this is a consistent approach to that of SuperRatings methodology.

What the researchers say

Established in 1987, Tasplan Super is a public offer industry fund, with Tasplan Pension introduced in 2007. With the aim to create a single Tasmanian superannuation fund, Tasplan Super merged with Quadrant Super in November 2015 and the RBF Accumulation Scheme in April 2017.

The fund offers a range of investment choice to members with different risk profiles, which includes five Diversified and five single-sector investment strategies. The Balanced option has delivered top quartile performance compared to the SuperRatings Index over the long term.

Fees for the Balanced option are lower than the industry average across all account balances assessed, with the Member Administration fee capped at $1,500 p.a. Transaction fees, however apply for withdrawals and investment switches with the first switch free of charge for each financial year.

A reasonable level of pension flexibility is provided, with a choice of multiple payment frequencies, ranging from twice-monthly to annually. Members can also nominate a fixed percentage draw-down order or pro-rata across investments.

Members can access fee-for-service financial planning through Quadrant First in Tasmania and Link Advice in other states. Tasplan's new look website offers interactive features, which contain improved fact sheets, calculators and video podcasts assisting members in their engagement.
