Benchmark investment information - how performance is measured

To ensure comparability for consumers, the RateCity superannuation comparison is based on the asset allocation of each of the MySuper/Pension products, irrespective of the name of the investment option. This methodology allows consumers to compare products on a like for like basis and removes any ambiguities associated with the name of the investment option. For example, an investment option may be classified as growth, however its asset allocation may in fact mean it should be classified as high growth. By using the asset allocation as the dominant identifier, we believe this provides the most robust framework for consumers to compare funds and recognise that this is a consistent approach to that of SuperRatings methodology.

What the researchers say

Unisuper Flexi Pension established in 1994 and is dedicated exclusively to those employed in the Australian higher education and research sector. The pension offering has consistently proved itself as an excellent value for money product, retaining the SuperRatings Platinum rating for the ninth consecutive year. UniSuper is also Infinity Recognised for the sixth consecutive year for demonstrating excellent environmental and social principles.

The fund's investment menu consists of 16 investment options across Multi and Single sector investment strategies, including Global Environmental Opportunities, Australian Equity Income and Global Companies in Asia. The default Balanced option outperformed the SuperRatings Index in 2015 with long term returns also positioned above the index.

UniSuper Flexi Pension provides flexibility allowing members to choose between five payment frequencies. Members can allocate pension payments between up to four financial institutions and have the ability to switch investments on a weekly basis. The fund offers additional flexibility through estate planning options which includes non-lapsing binding nominations, reversionary and child reversionary pension, while transition to retirement pension is also available. In-house financial advice is also offered on a fee-for-service basis, as well as a website providing secure online access and good educational material.
