How to make your dream ski trip a reality

Have you been dreaming about a ski trip, but just can’t afford it? Or maybe you’re still reeling over that last great ski trip you had, but the budget just doesn’t allow for another? A skiing holiday can be a pricey event, once you buy the warm and protective clothing, the ski equipment, the flights and accommodation. You start adding these numbers up in your head and the dream slips further and further away from being a reality. However, we’ve got some handy tips for you that may just make the whole ordeal seem a little more affordable.

Save a bundle on gear

Firstly, rent your equipment, don’t buy it. Unless you plan to take skiing up as a regular weekend hobby, buying the equipment is a waste of money. It will simply sit in your cupboard as a dust collector. So, why not save the average $2000 that it will cost to buy your own, and spend it on the flights? Renting equipment only costs around $75 a day, with cheaper rates for use over a longer period of time and,you can be guaranteed that it will always be readily available on or near the skiing location.

Take advantage of ski enthusiasts

Another solution: maybe you got the idea of skiing from friends who are a little ‘ski-mad’. They’ve been to all the best locations, and really know their stuff. Well, chances are, they probably have their own collection of ski equipment, so why not ask to borrow it? This will save you a large sum of money, and with their excitement towards skiing, they’re bound to be more than happy to lend the equipment, if it will encourage you to go!

Get a group and go with friends

You are probably not the only one in your circle of friends who has the desire to go traveling. It’s likely you will be surprised at how many of your other friends have the same farfetched dream of traveling to far away locations and becoming a pro-skier. So why not take advantage of this? Don’t just assume your friends won’t be interested, ask around, and if you find that you now have a small group of interested friends assembled, it may work to your advantage. Many skiing locations offer travel deals for groups that are much cheaper than doing it solo. Do your research, and don’t just settle with the first quote you receive. There are a lot of great packages out there, that may make the flights, accommodation and equipment cheaper for you and your mates.

Search for snow closer to home

Finally, you have sorted out a way around the budgetary constraints put in place by the assumed cost of equipment and accommodation, only to hit a speed bump; the flights. Unfortunately, your desire to travel halfway across the world to go skiing down the Swiss Alps is going to cost you much more than your budget allows. Well, it is not yet time to panic as there is still a solution. If your real desire is simply to travel for the skiing and not for the sightseeing, why not go somewhere more local? Although this may not be the Alps that you’ve always dreamed of, the experience and activities will still be the same, and a change in location will only be a minor setback. You may also find that this is a wise idea; at least you can spend your time learning how to ski in a closer and, more importantly, cheaper location and still travel to your dream location at a later date when it is more affordable. This way, you won’t spend your time learning how to put your right foot in front of your left, but rather will be expertly skiing down the slopes with the coordination to appreciate your surroundings at the same time.
