Annualised figures are the average per year returns of the rated option based on the cumulative returns for the past 5 years to 30/06/2015, past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance. Performance and fee data is based on the option which is rated by SuperRatings and stated on each product's landing page.

Benchmark investment information - how performance is measured

To ensure comparability for consumers, the RateCity superannuation comparison is based on the asset allocation of each of the MySuper/Pension products, irrespective of the name of the investment option. This methodology allows consumers to compare products on a like for like basis and removes any ambiguities associated with the name of the investment option. For example, an investment option may be classified as growth, however its asset allocation may in fact mean it should be classified as high growth. By using the asset allocation as the dominant identifier, we believe this provides the most robust framework for consumers to compare funds and recognise that this is a consistent approach to that of SuperRatings methodology.

What the researchers say

A national multi-employer superannuation fund, Equip Super has been operating since 1931. The origins of the fund lie with the infrastructure sectors of Victoria, specifically in the Electricity, Gas and Water Industries. However, the fund is now open to the general public. Equip Personal continues to provide excellent value to their members, securing the SuperRatings Platinum rating and being a Choice Super of the Year finalist in 2016.

With an initial investment of $1,000, members have access to an investment menu with eleven Multi Manager options across Multi and Single Sector strategies. The Balanced Growth option outperformed in 2015 with similar long term trends reflected across other core options.

Fees are competitive across all account balances assessed, while offering the flexibility of free unlimited switches. To assist members with higher account balances, the administration fee has been capped for account balances over $450,000.

The absence of occupational factors in the fund's insurance offering provides blue collar workers with an improved value of cover compared to their white collar counterparts. Death/TPD fixed cover is equal to the value transferred from the member's Corporate account (upon ceasing employment) or an amount specifically requested and approved by the insurer. Income Protection (IP) provides up to 85% salary coverage with a choice of 30, 60 and 90 day waiting periods.

Members also have access to an in-house financial planning service on a fee-for-service basis.
