Benchmark investment information - how performance is measured

To ensure comparability for consumers, the RateCity superannuation comparison is based on the asset allocation of each of the MySuper/Pension products, irrespective of the name of the investment option. This methodology allows consumers to compare products on a like for like basis and removes any ambiguities associated with the name of the investment option. For example, an investment option may be classified as growth, however its asset allocation may in fact mean it should be classified as high growth. By using the asset allocation as the dominant identifier, we believe this provides the most robust framework for consumers to compare funds and recognise that this is a consistent approach to that of SuperRatings methodology.

What the researchers say

REST was established in 1988 to provide superannuation services to retail employees. Today, REST is a MySuper authorised public-offer fund with membership open to employees across all industries.

The default MySuper option, Core Strategy, has outperformed the SuperRatings Index over the longer term. REST offers this as a MySuper compliant option in both their REST Super and REST Corporate products. Choice members can select from a suite of 13 investment options.

REST's fees compare well to the industry average, although the structure encompasses both dollar and asset based fees. Fees are charged for withdrawals and buy/sell spreads are charged per transaction.

The REST insurance offering provides a 'lifestage' design. This sees the member's automatic cover vary with age to ensure adequate insurance cover at each stage of life. Additional Death, Total and Permanent Disablement (TPD) and Income Protection (IP) insurance is also available. LTIP insurance is now standard, available up to 89% of salary after a 60 day waiting period, and is payable until the member reaches age 65. To keep up with the cost of living, the level of Death, TPD and IP Basic benefits are indexed on 1 January each year by 5%.

REST offers extensive additional member benefits, including financial planning, discounted health and travel insurance as well as access to low-cost banking products.
