Annualised figures are the average per year returns of the rated option based on the cumulative returns for the past 5 years to 30/06/2015, past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance. Performance and fee data is based on the option which is rated by SuperRatings and stated on each product's landing page.

Benchmark investment information - how performance is measured

To ensure comparability for consumers, the RateCity superannuation comparison is based on the asset allocation of each of the MySuper/Pension products, irrespective of the name of the investment option. This methodology allows consumers to compare products on a like for like basis and removes any ambiguities associated with the name of the investment option. For example, an investment option may be classified as growth, however its asset allocation may in fact mean it should be classified as high growth. By using the asset allocation as the dominant identifier, we believe this provides the most robust framework for consumers to compare funds and recognise that this is a consistent approach to that of SuperRatings methodology.

What the researchers say

The Portfolio Service (TPS) product suite caters to those members seeking a superannuation or pension product with flexible features which can be managed through the use of a financial adviser.

The TPS Super Essentials product offers an extensive investment menu consisting of Multi and Asset Specific options, Term Deposits and access to over 200 Diversified Equities. This enables members to tailor an investment strategy to suit their personal requirements. The IOOF Multi Series Balanced Trust outperformed the SuperRatings index in both 2015 and the long term.

The fee structure is complex but lower than industry average across all account balances assessed. Some of the fees are negotiated between the employer and the Plan adviser. Establishment and contribution fees do not apply and no additional fees are incurred when withdrawing or switching investments.

The fund's voluntary insurance package is available for members working more than 15 hours per week. Members have access to unlimited Death cover and up to $5 million Total and Permanent Disability cover. Income Protection (IP) cover provides reasonable choice with up to 85% (including SG) salary coverage, 3 waiting periods and benefit payment periods over 2 years, 5 years or to age 65 benefit. Premiums are expensive compared to the average fund.

Other features include a financial planning service with a fee-for-service option and a dedicated adviser website allowing access to client details, as well as the ability to provide consolidated reporting.
