    Features

As the name suggests, the American Express Qantas Discovery Card allows you to earn points towards flights with Qantas and its partner airlines with every dollar you spend. To earn points faster, you can also add up to four supplementary cards to your account.

This card comes with no annual fee, and like American Express’ other products, offers a promotional interest rate of 0 per cent for a 12-month period if you transfer your existing credit card balance onto the American Express Qantas Discovery Card (although a one-off establishment fee applies).

Due to its global network, American Express offers a range of benefits for its customers. This includes 24/7 account assistance, emergency card replacement within 48 hours, refund protection, purchase protection, online fraud protection and compatibility with Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and Android Pay.

    Pros
    • No annual fee
    • 0% balance transfer offer
    • Qantas rewards program
    Cons
    • High interest rate
    • Some fees apply
    • Rewards program limited to Qantas

    Who is it good for?

Travellers may find this card appealing, especially those who fly with Qantas or one of its partner airlines on a regular basis. To get the most value out of the rewards program, it helps if you frequently use your credit card to make purchases and have a family member who can hold a supplementary card, enabling you to earn points faster. If you would prefer more rewards options, though, it may be worth shopping around for a card that offers a broader program.

This product may also suit those who are keen to clear the outstanding balance on their existing credit card without paying interest. By switching to the American Express Qantas Discovery Card, you can take advantage of the 0 per cent rate for balance transfers and pay down your credit card bill without making any interest payments for 12 months.

    What RateCity says

Along with the chance to earn Qantas rewards, this card offers a 0 per cent interest rate for balance transfers, giving you an opportunity to whittle down that out-of-control credit card bill without worrying about interest by switching your account over to Amex. Take care though: this promotional rate only lasts for 12 months before repayments revert to the card’s regular interest rate, which is high compared to the market average. It also doesn’t include any purchases you make on top of your balance transfer, which similarly incurs the card’s normal rate.

Another benefit with this product is no annual fee – a significant drawcard as Amex’s other Qantas cards come with hefty annual fees. Several other charges apply for things like late payments, cash advances and issuing additional statements. If you sign up for this card, it’s worth assessing your banking habits to minimise the amount spent on fees.

    Applying/eligibility

To be eligible for the American Express Qantas Discovery Card, you need to meet Amex’s income and credit approval criteria. You must be 18 years or over and an Australian citizen, a permanent resident or hold a current business long stay visa. Successful applicants must also have a personal or household gross (pre-tax) annual income of $35,000 or more, and have no history of bad debt or payment default. Applications can be made through the Amex website.
