Features

The CUA Low Rate Credit Card is open to members of CUA and comes with a moderately low interest rate, a moderately low annual fee (waived for the first year) and a moderate number of interest-free days. It also has a low minimum credit limit and a moderately low late payment fee.

Cardholders moving over existing debt from another card can pay 0 per cent interest on balance transfers for an introductory period with no balance transfer fee.

Nine additional cardholders are allowed with the CUA Low Rate Credit Card at no additional cost. There is no dedicated rewards program or complimentary insurance coverage included with this card.

The CUA Low Rate Credit Card is compatible with Apple Pay and Google Pay, which means cardholders who connect their account to either of these services can leave their card at home and pay in-store using their smartphone.

Pros
  • Moderately low interest rate
  • Moderately low annual fee
  • Balance transfer deal
Cons
  • No rewards program
  • No complimentary insurance
  • High overseas spending fees

Who is it good for?

The CUA Low Rate Credit Card may suit current CUA members (or prospective members) who want to cut down on unnecessary fees and reduce the risk of debt, owing to its moderately low interest rate and fees.

It may also be a good option for people struggling to pay off existing debt, as transferred balances will incur no interest for a limited period.

Small businesses and other shared account holders might also benefit from the generous allowance for up to nine free supplementary cardholders.

However, the CUA Low Rate Credit Card probably wouldn’t be appropriate for people who spend regularly on a credit card and pay it off diligently as it doesn’t offer any rewards for spending.

It’s also not geared towards frequent flyers as it doesn’t allow cardholders to earn frequent flyer points or include complimentary insurance, and comes with high fees for overseas transactions.

What RateCity says

The CUA Low Rate Credit Card might be attractive to some people due to it having both a moderately low interest rate and moderately low fees.

The moderate interest-free period is an added incentive for people who mainly use a credit card to make bigger purchases and pay them off over a couple of months.

This card’s allowance for nine free additional cardholders is noteworthy, and the balance transfer deal might appeal to those considering switching lenders.

However, as this card doesn’t come with a rewards program or other perks like complimentary insurance or a bonus points offer, it’s not the right choice for everyone.

If you use your credit card for everyday purchases and always pay off your balance before it begins accruing interest, you might find a card that offers rewards for spending (and probably a higher interest rate) to be more appropriate.

Applying/eligibility

To be eligible for the CUA Low Rate Credit Card, you must be at least 18 years old, an Australian permanent resident and meet the lender’s application criteria. You also need to be a CUA member and have a CUA bank account. To apply, you will need to provide proof of ID, as well as information about your employment, financial standing and income, such as bank statements and payslips. Applications can be completed online or by visiting a CUA branch.
