amaysim Energy energy

Founded in 2010, amaysim became one of Australia’s leading SIM-only mobile service providers. After it acquired Click Energy in 2017, the company entered the energy market. The energy provider started offering subscription services similar to how data plans for phones are available.

When they first launched amaysim electricity and gas in 2017, they offered energy services to New South Wales, South Australia, Victoria and Queensland. However, in August 2020, they sold the energy part of the business to AGL, which will come into effect in October 2021. For more information on the change, check out amaysim’s website.

Changes to amaysim Energy

The company has sold Click Energy, or amaysim energy, to AGL and will no longer offer electricity to customers from October 2021. AGL will provide energy to all existing amaysim energy customers.

If you’re an existing customer, there will be no changes to your current plan, and you can manage your account and pay bills via the My amaysim app. The app allows you to check energy use, top-up your subscription plan, and find any other help or support. You will continue to receive communication from amaysim and will be advised of any changes.

amaysim energy plans

The amaysim electricity prices attempted to reduce your chances of bill shock by using monthly payments instead of quarterly bills. The plans don’t include any confusing discounts ensuring you understand exactly what you’re paying each month.

The prepaid amaysim electricity plans were similar to mobile data plans. You paid a certain amount every month at a flat rate without any daily supply charges. If your usage exceeds a certain level, you’d purchase additional top-up plans. If you don’t use all of the energy allocated, the balance rolled over to the following month. It was simple to switch from a higher plan to a lower one or vice versa without additional fees as there were no lock-in contracts or exit fees. The prepaid plans included a smart meter and its installation. If you had solar panels, you'd be eligible for the amaysim feed-in tariff, which pays you when you feed energy back into the grid from your solar panels.

If you’re in Queensland, Victoria, NSW, and South Australia, you’d also be able to choose the classic electricity plan. It’s a more traditional plan but still aims to reduce the bill shock via monthly billing. The following discounts off the reference price were available with this plan:

  • 13 per cent for NSW customers
  • 10 per cent for Victoria customers
  • 5 per cent for Queensland customers
  • 9 per cent for South Australian customers

If you have a smart meter, the electricity bill is simply the monthly usage. However, if you have a traditional meter, the meter reading is done every three months. You’d still be billed monthly, with low estimates for your monthly energy use. These amounts will then be deducted from your quarterly bill once the meter has been read.

Customers with solar panels could choose the Classic Solar plan, which offers the same benefits as the traditional plan but has higher feed-in tariff rates.

Energy subscription plans

The company gained a reputation with excellent customer service and competitive pricing in the telecom space. They brought this similar approach to amaysim energy by providing simple, convenient, and transparent energy plans with no lock-in contracts, monthly billing, and no confusing discounts.

The standard offer was the Classic electricity plan with no exit fees and a fixed agreement period. For customers in NSW, Queensland, and Victoria the subscription-based plans were also available. You can choose between three monthly plans based on your usage requirements. Every plan offered a certain amount of energy you could use during the month for a fixed price. If you require more energy, you could purchase a top-up plan.

Subscription plans for Victoria:

  • $70 per month for 180kWH and $17.5 top-up for 45kWh
  • $90 per month for 280kWH and $22.5 top-up for 70kWh
  • $120 per month for 320kWH and $30 top-up for 97.5kWh
  • $160 per month for 440kWH and $42.5 top-up for 180kWh

Subscription plans for Queensland:

  • $80 per month for 240kWH and $20 top-up for 60kWh
  • $110 per month for 380kWH and $27.5 top-up for 95kWh
  • $170 per month for 660kWH and $42.5 top-up for 165kWh
  • $260 per month for 1050kWH and $65 top-up for 345kWh

Subscription plans for NSW:

  • $80 per month for 230kWH and $20 top-up for 57.5kWh
  • $115 per month for 360kWH and $28.75 top-up for 95kWh
  • $170 per month for 600kWH and $42.5 top-up for 150kWh
  • $255 per month for 940kWH and $63.75 top-up for 315kWh

amaysim Solar plans

As one of the few mainstream energy retailers offering specific deals for solar customers, amaysim set itself apart. The amaysim solar plans had some of the largest feed-in tariffs. Still, you should’ve checked the base rates before deciding on the potential advantages of the solar rebates. The amaysim solar plan with the generous feed-in tariffs may not have been suitable depending on how much power you used and how much you exported to the grid.

The amaysim energy deals for solar panels feed-in tariffs are 13c/kWh in Victoria, 10c/kWh in Queensland, and 16c/kWh in NSW. Although the feed-in tariffs may appear generous, you should’ve compared the amaysim energy charges for solar plans and the rates on standard energy plans before deciding.

amaysim gas plans

You could also have added a classic natural gas plan to any other amaysim energy plan for an extra fee. The natural gas plan benefits were similar to the classic electricity plan. With the natural gas plan, you could benefit from no lock-in period and no exit fees while being billed monthly to avoid bill shock.

How to pay energy bills

When you signed-up for the energy plan, you‘d set up a direct debit to pay the bills on the due date. If you subscribed to the classic energy plan, you could pay your bill in one of the below ways:

  • Online with a valid credit or debit card
  • Over the phone between 9 am and 5 pm weekdays
  • Complete the direct debit form in your My amaysim account
  • Via BPAY using the reference code and biller code available on the energy bill
