How can I be sure that communications that I receive from RateCity are legitimate?

While scam techniques can and will change over time, and are becoming increasingly sophisticated, there are a few things that you can look out for to make you think twice about whether a message is real, including:

  • Spelling or grammatical errors
  • Messages and communications not addressed to you personally
  • An email address not matching the company name
  • A request for personal information
  • A sense of urgency
  • The inclusion of a destination link that doesn't include the company name
  • Inclusion of attachments you weren't expecting
  • Language suggesting you've won a prize, or that you need to pay a fee for shipping or delivery
  • Overseas correspondence

RateCity will never send an email or call you asking you to share financial information.

I haven't been impacted by a data breach, but I'm still concerned. What can I do?

Consider running through our 5 point checklist above. If you're still concerned you might be the victim, you may want to see what the Australian Securities & Investment Commission advised after the 2022 Optus data breach, as its information could be relevant to your situation. Alternatively, consider learning more about data breaches from the government's Australian Cyber Security Centre.
