Airline rewards credit cards are products tailored to individuals who think of the airport lobby as their second home. With an airline reward credit card, frequent flyers can use their general spending to shave off the cost of their airplane tickets.

The Qantas Platinum Credit Card from Woolworths is one such product, offering some tempting rewards to cardholders who can make their spending work for them. But taking advantage of these rewards also means balancing the need to pay some fees and charges that fall on the pricier end of things.

Earn airline rewards with the Qantas Platinum Credit Card from Woolworths

Frequent flyers could use the Qantas Platinum Credit Card from Woolworths to their advantage. Every $1 spent on eligible purchases translates into one Qantas Point, which can then be redeemed for flight tickets. In this case, "eligible purchases" also include bill payments, helping to soften the blow of those regular living expenses.

Be aware that this ratio is only available for the first $2,500 spent per statement - after that, every $1 spent will only net you half a Qantas Point.

If you want to really make the most of your points with this Qantas reward credit card, there are ways to get extra points. Spending on selected Qantas products and services in Australia - namely passenger flights purchased directly from Qantas, and Qantas Club and Qantas Frequent Flyer annual and joining fees - will get you one point per dollar.

Meanwhile taking your business to participating Woolworths Group shops and scanning your Everyday Rewards barcode on the back of the card will also get you bonus points. You must also be a Qantas Frequent Flyer member and link your membership. Once this is done, you can:

  • Spend more than $30 at Woolworths supermarkets, Woolworths Online and BWS stores to earn one point per dollar spent
  • Spend more than $30 at Big W stores to earn one point per $2 spent
  • Spend any total at Cellarmasters and Big W Online to earn one point per dollar spent

Extras and features

Qantas reward credit cards typically have a number of extras that cardholders can claim, and this card is no different. You can get numerous discounts from selected retailers by using the Qantas Platinum Credit Card from Woolworths, including:

  • 10 percent off Woolworths Insurance, excluding life insurance
  • 5 percent off for one weekend a month at Thomas Dux stores
  • 50 percent off certain wine cases at Cellarmasters
  • 15 percent off rentals at Hoyts Kiosks; and much more

Every cardholder also receives complimentary insurance options, a 24/7 platinum concierge service and various extras when booking at Visa Luxury Hotels.

Fees and charges

The trade-off for all of these generous rewards and extras are relatively steep interest rates:

  • 20.49 percent on purchases
  • 21.99 percent on cash advances

The Qantas Platinum Credit Card from Woolworths also has fees that are on the higher end of the spectrum, which cardholders will want to be aware of:

  • A $99 annual primary fee for the first year, and $139 for every year after that
  • A $30 over limit fee
  • A cash advance fee of either 3 percent or $5, whichever is largest
  • An additional cardholder fee of $29
  • Late payment and dishonour fees of $35 and $10, respectively

On the flipside, you pay nothing for a replacement card, and you also receive 55 days interest free on purchases.

If you want to apply, you can do so online through the Woolworths Money website. You simply have to be an Australian resident of at least 18 years of age with a solid credit history. You also need to have a pre-tax income of at least $30,000 a year. The process should only take around 10 minutes, at which point you'll be inches away from receiving your Qantas Platinum Credit Card from Woolworths.
