Annualised figures are the average per year returns of the rated option based on the cumulative returns for the past 5 years to 30/06/2015, past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance. Performance and fee data is based on the option which is rated by SuperRatings and stated on each product's landing page.

Benchmark investment information - how performance is measured

To ensure comparability for consumers, the RateCity superannuation comparison is based on the asset allocation of each of the MySuper/Pension products, irrespective of the name of the investment option. This methodology allows consumers to compare products on a like for like basis and removes any ambiguities associated with the name of the investment option. For example, an investment option may be classified as growth, however its asset allocation may in fact mean it should be classified as high growth. By using the asset allocation as the dominant identifier, we believe this provides the most robust framework for consumers to compare funds and recognise that this is a consistent approach to that of SuperRatings methodology.

What the researchers say

BUSSQ was established in 1985 to provide superannuation services to employees in the Queensland building and construction industry. The BUSSQ Premium Choice product was established in 2006 after the fund achieved public offer status, and is designed for members requiring a more comprehensive offering.

The investment menu offers members access to 11 investment options, consisting of 3 Diversified and 8 Single Sector options, including a unique Emerging Markets option invested in Brazil, India and China. The default Balanced Growth option has outperformed the SuperRatings Index over the past 5 years.

Fees are competitive when compared to the industry average across all account balances assessed. Ongoing costs are low and members are not charged for switching investment options. Fees do apply however for withdrawals and terminating an account.

BUSSQ offers members Death cover up to $5 million and Total and Permanent Disablement (TPD) insurance up to $3 million. Income Protection insurance is also available for both a 2 year benefit period and until age 65, covering up to 85% of salary (inclusive of SG contributions) with a 30 or 60 day waiting period. Self-employed members can access Income Protection insurance through Construction Income Protection Queensland (CIPQ).

Limited financial advice is offered at no cost to members. A range of educational materials, including calculators and fact sheets are available to members online.
