What is Qantas Green tier?

Qantas Frequent Flyers have a new tier to strive for, and this one is all about sustainable choices. The new, eco-friendly ‘Green’ tier will sit alongside frequent flyer existing memberships and offer generous rewards to eligible members.

Emissions from air travel are considered to be a significant contributor to climate change due to the CO2 emissions being released by airplanes. However, as a leader in sustainable aviation, Qantas has previously committed to achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

The Green frequent flyer tier offered by Qantas is a competitive way that one airline is striving to mitigate its impact on the environment.

What is Qantas Green tier?

The Qantas Green tier is a new frequent flyer tier offering unique rewards to eligible members based on the sustainable choices and actions they make. It is not separate to the existing tiers, but sits alongside Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum tier memberships.

Qantas Green Tier Explained

How do you achieve Qantas Green tier?

To achieve Green tier you must complete an activity in five different categories out of six. The categories are:

  1. Offset your Qantas flight – Choose to offset your flight when booking your tickets or in ‘My Account’ on the Qantas website.
  2. Offset your home and car – Offset your home and car emissions by installing solar panels through Qantas’ partner, Solargain.
  3. Stay at eco-accredited hotels – Qantas recommends 26 eco-accredited hotels from regional retreats to beach holidays, which can also earn you 150 bonus points for each night.
  4. Purchase eco wine – Qantas Wine offers over 200 sustainable wines.
  5. Test your sustainability knowledge – The Qantas Wellbeing App offers a sustainability quiz designed to show members how they may make more eco-friendly choices.
  6. Donate to sustainable causes – Qantas-deemed sustainable causes and organisations include OzHarvest, UNICEF, the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, and Kimberley Land Council.

Qantas Frequent Flyers that achieve this Green tier may choose between pocketing 10,000 frequent flyer points, 50 status credits, or choosing to have 3 tonnes of carbon offset on your behalf. You may also benefit from access to exclusive sustainability events and experiences.

Unlike other Qantas Frequent Flyer tiers, you will not be sent a membership card upon joining. Instead, you may enjoy a digital Qantas Frequent Flyer card, and change your Qantas App icon to an “exclusive green” to showcase you have achieved Green tier.

Qantas Group CEO, Alan Joyce, said: “This new Green tier is a way of encouraging and recognising those who want to do their part by offering Qantas Points or status credits, which we know helps shape customer choices.”

Qantas Loyalty CEO, Olivia Wirth, said: “The innovative program makes it easier for frequent flyers to make more sustainable choices, at home and when they travel, and rewards them when they do.”

Ms Wirth announced Qantas expects to see 100,000 of the airline's 13 million Frequent Flyer members achieve Green tier membership within the first year.

“We know that points influence behaviour, we’ve seen that when we’ve provided points for walking and sleeping through the Wellbeing App as well as to reward those who got vaccinated. We also know that small changes by many, can have a big impact,” said Ms Wirth.
