How to transfer Qantas Frequent Flyer points to another person

Qantas Frequent Flyer program is one of the most popular loyalty programs in Australia, providing members several benefits and rewards, including flight upgrades and complimentary hotel accommodation.

One of the benefits of being a Qantas Frequent Flyer member is the ability to transfer points to family or friends, which can help them reach their own travel goals. Let’s explore how Qantas members can transfer their frequent flyer points to another member.

How do you transfer Qantas Frequent Flyer Points?

The process of transferring your Qantas Frequent Flyer Points to your family is straightforward, but you can only make the transfer to select family members.

To transfer Qantas Frequent Flyer points, you'll need to have a certain amount of points in your account and follow specific steps, including providing the recipient's frequent flyer number. To actually make the points transfer, you’ll need to:

  • Transfer points online by logging into your Qantas Frequent Flyer account; or
  • Call the Qantas  Frequent Flyer Service Centre for assistance to transfer your points.

If you transfer points through a consultant,  you may need to pay an assistance fee. Consider asking the call centre consultant about the applicable fee before executing any transaction.

An alternative to transferring your Qantas Points to family members is directly booking reward flights for them using your own account. You’ll need to decide which option is better for you, and it could depend on how soon your family wants to travel, the expiration date of your points, and where you receive better value for your points.

Who can you transfer Qantas Frequent Flyer Points to?

Qantas’ proprietary Frequent Flyer program allows a frequent flyer to transfer their points to only certain family members. Called Qantas Family Transfers, this facility allows you to transfer some of your points to a family member within any 12 month period.  However, the family member must be a Qantas Frequent Flyer member to receive the points transfer.

Furthermore, these transfers can only be made to certain family members defined as eligible family members by the airline and include your spouse or domestic partner, children, parents, grandparents, grandchildren, siblings, and in-laws.

Are there any limits on how many Qantas Frequent Flyer Points you can transfer?

Yes, there are limits on how many Qantas Frequent Flyer points you can transfer to family members.

Currently, Qantas allows members to transfer up to 600,000 points in any 12-month period to eligible family members. There’s also a minimum transfer of 5,000 points in every family transfer you make.

It's also worth noting that once you transfer your points to someone else, you cannot reverse the transaction. The transferred points cannot be returned to your account.

Overall, while there are limits and fees associated with transferring Qantas Frequent Flyer points to family members, it could still help you get some value out of your frequent flyer points if you don’t want to use them for yourself. Just be sure to weigh the costs and benefits carefully before making a transfer.
