The way in which we make payments is constantly evolving. Once, cash was king. Then came credit cards and debit cards. Now, contactless payments through personal devices, such as phones and watches, are commonplace.

You can make contactless payments using compatible smart devices by linking a bank account, debit card or credit card to a payments platform app and 'tapping' your phone or watch at accepted payment terminals.

One such payment platform is Samsung Pay. Here’s what you need to know about making credit card payments.

What is Samsung Pay?

Samsung Pay is a mobile payment and digital wallet service, exclusive to Samsung devices. It allows users to make payments with their smartphones or smartwatches, and it supports various payment methods, including credit cards, debit cards, and loyalty cards.

Essentially, your device takes the place of cards or cash. Samsung Pay is an alternative to similar payment platforms, such as Apple Pay and Google Pay. Many platforms have now consolidated their payments apps into digital wallets that not only hold bank cards and process payments but also store and provide easy access to loyalty cards, airline boarding passes, vaccine records, event passes, transit tickets and more.

How does Samsung Pay work?

Samsung Pay is now part of Samsung Wallet. This includes all the features and benefits of Samsung Pay, together with Samsung Pass, digital home and car keys, digital asset management, and more.

Samsung Pay is relatively simple to download and use with your credit card. In fact, Samsung Wallet or Samsung Pay come pre-installed on most Samsung devices.

To get Samsung Pay on your compatible device:

  • Download and install the Samsung Wallet or Samsung Pay app
  • Scan or input your selected credit card/s (up to 10) and link them to the app
  • Give Samsung Pay permission to make payments directly from your nominated account

To make a purchase using Samsung Pay:

  • Launch the app. If you’re using a mobile phone, you can simply swipe up from the bottom of the screen, either in sleep mode or via the home screen. You'll be prompted to approve the payment (usually via identity verification)
  • If you’ve added multiple cards and want to change the one you’re using, you can simply swipe left or right across the screen to switch between cards until you've landed on the one you wish to use for a particular purchase
  • Once you’ve selected the right card, make the payment by holding your device near the payment terminal
  • Your phone will alert you once the payment has been accepted

Where can I use Samsung Pay?

One of the best things about Samsung Pay is that it’s possible to use it almost everywhere in Australia where digital payments are accepted. The app utilises Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, which securely transmits payment information between the device and payment terminal. Most payment terminals in Australia use NFC tech.

You can also use Samsung Pay online, if the option is available when checking out. Simply select Samsung Pay and follow the steps when prompted. However, for mobile and desktop payments you'll still need to authenticate any transactions you make through your smartphone using an iris scan, fingerprint or pin as confirmation.

Cards and devices compatible with Samsung Pay

Samsung Pay in Australia supports credit cards from a variety of banks, including Commonwealth Bank, ANZ, NAB, Westpac, American Express, AMP and many others. See Samsung Pay’s website for the full list of banking partners

Samsung Pay is compatible with nearly all Samsung devices, including the latest Galaxy S23 and Galaxy Watch5. This is because the payments technology is integrated into all Samsung Galaxy devices. It also works with some Samsung smartwatches. Contact Samsung Australia for more details.

Is Samsung Pay a safe way to make payments?

No system can offer complete protection, but Samsung Pay is fundamentally safe. The service uses multiple layers of security to protect users' payment information. For example, Samsung Pay employs tokenization to generate a unique code for each transaction, which helps to protect your credit card information.

Samsung Pay uses several quality security methods to ensure that your payments are protected, including:

  • Iris scan, which helps to protect your device and identity
  • Fingerprint verification, so only you can verify a payment
  • Passcode log-in, to further prevent fraudulent activity

What are the benefits of Samsung Pay?

Samsung Pay is a compelling alternative to traditional payment methods, and a convenient and reliable way to pay for everyday purchases. There are a number of reasons to consider using Samsung Pay:

Convenience: The primary benefit of Samsung Pay is being able to simplify your payment methods. You can leave your bulky wallet and cards at home, and make purchases just about anywhere. It’s also safe and secure, thanks to Samsung incorporating stringent identity and payment safeguards.

No fees: There are no fees to use Samsung Pay, aside from the nominal data charges you’ll accrue using your phone to make purchases. You may incur a temporary refundable fee of around $0.15 when you first link a credit card.

Rewards: You can collect all the rewards points you would normally earn with credit card transactions as if you were swiping or tapping your physical card. Plus, you can add other digital loyalty cards to your Samsung Wallet to capture points at the checkout.  Samsung Pay also have their own rewards program, Samsung Rewards, which allows users to earn points for each transaction they make using Samsung Pay, as well as opportunities to score bonus points.

Transit: You can set a default transport card on Samsung Pay and tap your device to pay for Transport for NSW services including buses, trains, ferries and light rail. You’ll receive the same travel benefits of an adult Opal card.
