You can never predict when the worst may occur, especially when travelling. This is why having travel insurance attached to your credit card may come in handy if an accident, theft or loss occurs.

Credit cards can offer much more than a means to purchase big ticket items. They can also come with a range of perks and features, such as rewards programs, concierge services and travel insurance.

When travelling overseas you typically may have to pay an insurer a large lump sum or ongoing repayments to qualify for insurance. However, many credit cards actually offer you partnered complementary travel insurance as a perk of banking with that provider.

What credit card travel insurance may cover

The type of coverage your credit card may offer will depend on the card itself, but may include:

  • Emergency medical costs, such as hospital bills.

  • Rental car excess costs.
  • Accidental death, disability and/or loss of income.

The level of coverage an insurer will provide is based on risk. If you were to engage in potentially dangerous activities, it’s likely that an insurer won’t cover you in the event of an accident.

For example, if you were to get on a motorbike or moped in Bali, your insurer may not cover medical bills in the event of an accident if you don’t have an international drivers licence or a motorbike licence.

How to qualify for credit card travel insurance

Insurance policies come with conditions that the credit card provider and/or insurer will require you to meet to qualify for your travel insurance.

These conditions may include:

  • Travel spends. You may need to spend a certain amount on prepaid travel costs with your credit card before you leave. This may include plane tickets, accommodation, rental cars etc.
  • Booking through one card. Some policies require you to make all of your travel bookings through the one credit card to qualify for coverage. If, for ex
