Where could your rewards points take you?

Recent RateCity research crunched the numbers on credit cards offering Qantas frequent flyer bonus points on sign up to discover which cards could take you as far as Rome by becoming a new customer.

There are currently 24 credit cards offering enough bonus points to take eligible applicants from Sydney to Melbourne and 21 that may take you as far as Darwin.

While only two credit cards may be able to get you to Rome (124,000 frequent flyer points) for the summer, there are several destinations within reach from bonus credit card points, such as Honolulu (57,500 frequent flyer points) and Bali (36,000 frequent flyer points).

From the RateCity database

According to the RateCity database (accurate as of 04/03/2022):

  • The average purchase rate is 16.38%
  • The average annual fee is $113.52

It’s important to keep in mind that purchase rates and annual fees are generally higher than average for rewards credit cards offering large sign up bonus points. These costs typically help to pay for credit card rewards programs and are to be expected when shopping for higher tier credit cards.

But if paying for higher annual fees and purchase rates doesn’t suit your budget, there are lower rate and fee options available. Keep the above figures in mind during your comparison to help you identify where different options fit on a scale of high to low fees and rates in the market.
